The Vancouver Canucks appear to be on the verge of making a move on the trade market, and it involves a familiar last name, just not the one most fans had circled on their wish lists.

According to NHL insiders David Pagnotta and Elliotte Friedman, the Canucks are in active trade discussions with the New York Rangers centered on defenseman Marcus Pettersson.

Later on Wednesday, team insider Thomas Drance was informed by sources that "the Marcus Pettersson trade is for a draft pick down the line, no players coming back to VAN in the deal."

Moments later, Friedman confirmed the return to be a 2030 first-rounder (top-10 protected).

The 30-year-old blue liner endured a difficult 2025-26 campaign, though he had plenty of company on a Canucks squad that finished at the bottom of the standings. Pettersson originally came to Vancouver on February 1, 2025, arriving as part of a trade package that included the first-round pick the club had received just one day earlier in the J.T. Miller deal.

Pettersson carries a $5.5 million cap hit and is heading into the second season of a six-year contract. Any trade would require him to waive a full no-movement clause, adding a layer of complexity to the negotiations.

The timing is notable. With free agency opening on July 1, front offices around the league are scrambling to reshape their rosters, and both Vancouver and New York have reasons to get creative with their cap situations heading into next season.

Pettersson played under head coach Mike Sullivan when they were both members of the Pittsburgh Penguins and a reunion with the bench boss could be just want the doctor ordered.

ANOTHER TRADE FROM NYC

Right after they acquired Pettersson, the Rangers flipped Will Borgen to the Bruins and getting draft picks in return; 2nd round pick in 2027 and a conditional third-round pick in 2028.
