Will it be broken?
The New York Rangers will be facing elimination in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final and you can bet that every time the Rangers find themselves in this scenario there will be long time hockey fans who will be quick to draw parallels to a similar situation they experienced in 1994.
1994 is of course the last time the Rangers were crowned Stanley Cup Champions and you can easily point to Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final that year as the moment that propelled the Rangers to that championship. The Rangers were down 3 - 2 in the series to the New Jersey Devils when Rangers captain Mark Messier famously guaranteed that the team would win Game 6 and subsequently force a Game 7, with Messier scoring a hat trick in the contest to make good on that promise.
That clutch performance by Messier was just one of many he would have in elimination games over his career, so many in fact that Messier currently holds the National Hockey League record for most goals when facing elimination. Over his career Messier played in 24 games in which he faced elimination and 16 times he would find the back of the net in those games for sole possession of first on the all time list, just 1 goal ahead of fellow NHL legends like Jaromir Jagr and Maurice "The Rocket" Richard.
Another player who isn't too far behind Messier either though and that is another New York Ranger in the form of Chris Kreider. While Kreider is not officially the captain of the Rangers he does appear to fulfil a similar role for this current iteration of the Rangers, and in Game 6 he could tie or even surpass Messier's all time record.
Kreider, who has played in 26 elimination games throughout his NHL career, currently has 15 goals over his career when facing elimination in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He needs just a single goal to tie the all time mark set by Messier and, if he manages to score twice, he will stand alone at the top of the mountain.
