It has been a week of very impressive goals in the National Hockey League. Earlier this week we had Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid set the hockey world on fire with an amazing 1 v 4 effort against the New York Rangers, and on Saturday night Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk did his best to match the fireworks of his Alberta rival.
Tkachuk scored an absolute beauty with 5 minutes left on the clock in the game's 3rd period, a goal that would prove to be the Flames 6th of the game. Tkachuk spun and tucked the puck between his legs before firing a shot that would beat goaltender Igor Shesterkin, because funnily enough this goal just so happened to also come against the aforementioned New York Rangers.
If you missed Tkachuk's goal from Saturday night, here's a replay:
The look on Tkachuk's face was an indication that he knew how absurd of a goal he had just scored and he was all smiles as his teammates came to celebrate the big moment with him. While there will no doubt be plenty of talk in the Flames locker room about Tkachuk's beautiful goal, at least one of his teammates is using it as an opportunity to get a little friendly ribbing in on Tkachuk in the public eye.
When Flames veteran goaltender Jacob Markstrom was asked about Tkachuk's big goal on Saturday night he provided a rather comical response, joking that Tkachuk had tried the move on him in the past but had never managed to sneak the puck by him.
"It never works in practice." said Markstrom following the game.
While he may very well have been joking, there is good reason to believe that Markstrom may also be telling the truth here. After a relatively mediocre first season with the Flames, Markstrom has been on fire this season and has looked like one of the most dominant netminder's in the entire National Hockey League early on in the regular season. Through 9 games he has a 1.65 goals against average and a .942 save percentage, there are probably not many shots finding their way past him in practice these days.
