Marner: “Hopefully he gets fined for that.”
Marner calls for a fine after yesterday's game.
The Toronto Maple Leafs came away victorious from Sunday night's matchup against the New York Islanders, beating them by a score of 4 - 2, and although the two teams won't meet again this season with the Islanders eliminated from playoff contention, it sounds like this may be a rivalry that both teams look to keep going come next season.
While John Tavares has been the focus of that rivalry over the course of the last several seasons, two of the younger stars on these two franchises may also be contributing to that rivalry as well. Former team Canada teammates Mathew Barzal of the Islanders and Mitch Marner of the Maple Leafs were born in the same year, the same month even, were drafted in the same round of the same draft, and even showed some signs of a friendly rivalry on Sunday night.
At one point during the game, while Marner was hanging out by the Islanders bench, Barzal decided to play the role of the agitator by taking a good grasp of Marner's arm and jersey, forcing the Leafs forward to exert a little extra energy to get down the ice. It didn't amount to much in terms of the outcome of the game, but it was a comical moment nonetheless.
Following the win for the Maple Leafs, Marner was asked about the incident with Barzal and he was quite blunt with his response. The Leafs forward suggested that Barzal should be fined for the infraction, something that isn't outside the realm of possibility given that he impacted the flow of play on the ice while sitting on the bench.
"That's pretty funny, hopefully he gets fined for that, that would be great," said Marner of Barzal grabbing him while on the bench.
Marner would go on to add that this was the first time he had experienced something like this and called the gesture "pretty funny." He also praised Barzal as a player recalling both their time as opponents and as teammates on team Canada.
