Marner walks out on Leafs: we know who convinced him to do it!
Twitter

On Tuesday, NHL insider Darren Dreger revealed that he expects the negations for Mitch Marner‘s new contract to extend past July 1st and that the young forward will likely meet with other NHL teams during the RFA offer sheet interview period that begins on June 26th.

While we all expected the young star to seek what is best for his personal life and career, however, we surely hope that he is not making these bold moves driven by people in his camp.

We all know his agent Darren Ferris has repeatedly made public comments midseason regarding his client’s upcoming negotiations, even making questionable remarks when the Leafs signed his teammate Auston Matthews to his lucrative deal.

It is expected that Marner will be seeking Matthews money, he who agreed to a  $11.6 million AAV that he signed prior to the trade deadline back in February.

If Marner noticed that he would not get close to Matthews, he might feel the need to put some pressure on the Leafs and test the RFA market for an offer sheet battle.

However, KHL insider Aivis Kalnins, who’s been commenting on NHL action for a while, wonders as many, if Marner’s father Paul isn’t the driving force behind his son’s latest move.

Marner’s father has been guilty of some candid comments he’s made throughout the season, especially back in December when he told Jonas Siegel of The Athletic that he believes his son should be paid in accordance with Matthews and added that he should received consideration for the Maple Leafs’ open captaincy.

Let’s hope everyone involved is keeping his mind that what needs to be done is whatever is best for Marner and his career and not for the money that might end up in their pockets once a deal is completed.

A lot going on in Toronto… or even in the Marner’s household for that matter.
