The New Jersey Devils have announced that Martin Brodeur has been promoted from his former role working on the business side of the team and will now serve as the team's Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and Goalie Coach.
For two seasons, 2018-19 and into 2019-20 prior to his adviser role, Brodeur served as Executive Vice President of Business Development for the New Jersey Devils. His new role will enable him to be more involved with personnel decisions, roster management, transactions, player recruitment, and overseeing the goaltending development department that he created. In addition, and as part of his new appointment, he will also expand his role to scouting.
"Working with Tom's (Fitzgerald) group for the past few years, I have seen firsthand what he and our Managing Partners, David Blitzer and Josh Harris are building," said Brodeur in a prepared statement on the team's website. "I've been fortunate to help them in that time, as we move in the right direction toward consistent, sustained success. This decision allows me to commit all my time to the hockey side and focus on achieving the ultimate goal for our players, tremendous fans and entire organization."
"Marty has been a tremendous resource to me in my time as General Manager with his experience, input, foresight, and relationships throughout the hockey world," said Fitzgerald in the same statement. "It makes sense to formalize and give clarity to his roles and responsibilities within the organization. I am excited that he has committed to staying with us, as we all work to continue to return New Jersey to the levels of success that Marty reached here as a player."
Needless to say, this is a big day for the Devils organization.
Brodeur is a franchise icon and, arguably, the greatest goaltender in NHL history. Personally, I'm not even sure he's in the top 3, but that's just my own personal opinion. Brodeur was a fantastic goaltender, but I feel like he was propped up by a very unique team and a very unique playing style for years. When I compare his career to the likes of Dominik Hasek and Patrick Roy, Brodeur falls just short. But again, that's just my opinion.
