Martin St. Louis sends his message loud and clear.

You knew that we were in store for something tonight when it came to Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis and Canadiens forward Jonathan Drouin, we just didn't know what shape it would take.

St. Louis had previously indicated that Drouin would be a healthy scratch for tonight's game after he missed a team meeting, but an injury to Canadiens' forward Kaiden Guhle forced St. Louis to re-insert Drouin into the lineup due to the National Hockey League's regulations. In spite of that, St. Louis made it clear before tonight's game that Drouin would still be disciplined.

"League rules," said St. Louis. "Jo's gonna dress but we'll see tonight how I send my message."

We now know of course that St. Louis chose to make a very public example of the 27 year old forward when he made him ride the pine for the entire first period of tonight's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

During the intermission, former NHLer Kevin Bieksa indicated his belief that he believes this level of punishment indicates Drouin is not a first time offender.

"I think this is more embarrassing than watching the game in the dressing room on the bike or something like that," said Bieksa. "Clearly sending a message to Drouin. I just don't think he's a first time offender... for St. Louis to make a public example like this, I feel like this is maybe a common theme."
