A small controversy has bubbled up around the Eastern Conference Final, one involving a talented National Anthem singer who may have performed just a little too well during Game 1 of that series.

The Eastern Conference Final is being contested between the Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes and in Game 1 of that series it was the Hurricanes playing host to the Canadiens. Prior to the start of the game the National Anthem's of both the United States of America and Canada were performed, as is customary, but anthem singer Mason Greer went above and beyond in the eyes of some with his performance.

If you don't know, the National Anthem when performed in Quebec, Canada is a bilingual one and, despite the fact that it is not typical to see the bilingual version of the Canadian anthem performed in the United States, Greer took it upon himself to perform the anthem in the manner the Canadiens would have on home ice.

You can listen to and see Greer's beautiful rendition in the short clip below:

Greer's performance earned a great deal of praise on social media for both the singer himself as well as for the Hurricanes organization for what most perceived to be a tremendous show of class and sportsmanship.

Greer responded to the outpouring of support by letting fans know that he was scheduled to perform the anthem during every home game for the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final.

"I'm glad to hear! We always do our best to be respectful to our opponents, even with high stakes involved," wrote Greer. "I will be doing the Canadian anthem at all [Hurricanes] home games this series."

Unfortunately for Greer it seems not everyone was happy with his rendition of the Canadian National Anthem, I suspect even less so after the Hurricanes lost Game 1 at home, and his scheduled performances have now been cancelled.

"With great sadness, I have been informed that the hurricanes will be sticking with one anthem singer for the remainder of this series," wrote Greer. "The support I've received over the last 3 days has been I will never forget. Huge thanks to the [Hurricanes] organization again for the opportunity!"

Thankfully hockey fans have once again proven to be wonderful people and have rallied to show their support for Greer during a difficult time.

Did the Hurricanes make the right call? Or is this a bad look? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
