Mason Marchment hits referee after blown call in Game 3.
Mason Marchment takes a whack at NHL referee Graham Skilliter and may be in major trouble.
Oh boy this could prove to be a major turning point in this series and for all of the wrong reasons.
Dallas Stars veteran forward Mason Marchment may have just stepped over a line he will regret having crossed in Game 3 of the second round Stanley Cup playoff series between Marchment's Stars and the Winnipeg Jets.
Marchment was furious with a series of non-calls during the course of Game 3 but it would be at the end of the game's second period that Marchment would make a decision he may soon live to regret. Marchment went down to the ice after he was hit away from the play by Jets forward Mark Scheifele and, in an attempt to draw a call, he quite frankly seemed to be embellishing the incident which in turn resulted in NHL referee Graham Skilliter keeping his whistle in his pocket.
Marchment was not happy at all with Skilliter's decision and could be seen yelling at the official on his way back to the Stars bench, but he would go beyond just a verbal confrontation with Skilliter. Marchment would take a clear whack with his stick at the leg of Skilliter but much to the official's credit he would simply continue skating and ignored the shot from Marchment.
The NHL has however always taken abuse of officials extremely seriously and I wouldn't be surprised if the league came down hard on Marchment over this incident. A major suspension for Marchment during the Stanley Cup playoffs would of course be a terrible outcome for the Stars, and who knows how else an incident of this nature might influence the officiating in their games moving forward.
