The NHL’s goalie market could be heading toward a major shakeup.

One of the biggest storylines to watch this summer involves Florida Panthers star goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, whose contract situation appears far from resolved.

According to NHL insider Chris Johnston, negotiations between Bobrovsky’s camp and the Panthers remain nowhere close to an agreement. In fact, Johnston recently suggested that he now expects the veteran netminder to reach unrestricted free agency on July 1, though he noted there is still time for the situation to change.

That’s a significant development.

Bobrovsky remains one of the league’s top goaltenders and has been a cornerstone of Florida’s success. However, reports indicate the 37-year-old is seeking a long-term contract to remain with the Panthers, similar to the deal teammate Brad Marchand received last summer.

At the moment, the gap between the two sides appears substantial.

If Bobrovsky ultimately reaches free agency, the Panthers would suddenly find themselves searching for a new starting goaltender, and one name is already generating speculation: Jordan Binnington.

According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast, Florida could emerge as a potential landing spot for the St. Louis Blues netminder if Bobrovsky departs.

The connection makes sense. Binnington remains one of the NHL’s most experienced playoff goaltenders and famously backstopped the Blues to a Stanley Cup championship in 2019. His reputation for thriving under pressure would make him an intriguing option for a Florida team still focused on competing for championships.

Meanwhile, there is growing belief that St. Louis may be ready to turn the crease over to Joel Hofer. Insider Frank Seravalli has reported that Hofer is viewed by many as the organization’s goalie of the future, potentially making Binnington available.

If that scenario unfolds, Florida and St. Louis could become key players in one of the most fascinating goalie stories of the offseason.

And if Bobrovsky and the Panthers fail to close the gap before July 1, the dominoes could start falling very quickly.
