Forget the Auston Matthews rumours! Interest in the young forward may be higher than previously believed.
A significant trade market appears to have developed around Toronto Maple Leafs winger Matthew Knies, according to a report from insider Chris Johnston, who revealed that at least one team made a substantial push to acquire the young forward ahead of the NHL trade deadline.
Johnston noted that one organization went as far as assembling a “six-piece” trade package in an effort to land Knies. While the exact components of the offer were not disclosed, the magnitude of the proposal reportedly caught attention around the league and underscored just how highly the 23-year-old is valued across multiple front offices.
Despite the size of the return being offered, Toronto ultimately declined to move the player.
“But you know, they got a lot of teams’ attention by being willing to listen on him,” Johnston explained, suggesting that while the Maple Leafs were not actively shopping Knies in a traditional sense, they were open enough to conversations that rival teams saw an opportunity to test the market.
Knies’ name has surfaced in trade speculation before. Reports indicated that the Montreal Canadiens showed interest earlier in the season, though those discussions were quickly shut down. Meanwhile, the Chicago Blackhawks have been repeatedly linked to the winger over a longer stretch, with continued league-wide chatter suggesting persistent interest in his services.
The buzz is not without reason. Knies put together a breakout campaign, finishing with 66 points in 79 games while continuing to develop into a more complete forward. His playmaking improved noticeably over the course of the season, and he also took steps forward defensively, rounding out his profile as a top-six NHL winger.
While Toronto’s new front office, led by GM John Chayka, is still evaluating the roster and long-term direction of the team, Johnston suggested that Knies’ future could remain a topic to watch. With draft capital and organizational pressure shifting, league insiders believe no player outside the absolute core is entirely beyond discussion.
