Matt Martin returns to old team on a tryout (PTO) contract
The 35 year old gets one more kick at the can.
According to New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello himself, the Islanders have invited veteran forward Matt Martin to training camp on a professional tryout (PTO) contract.
From the Isles:
Now... don't be fooled.
The Isles have no intention of bringing Martin back on an NHL contract. This is simply a courtesy being paid to Martin from Lamoriello so that other NHL teams can get a look at Martin in the pre-season. This is Lamoriello doing a favor to a player that he has a long history with and nothing more.
The 35 year old Martin scored four goals and eight points in 57 games with the Isles last season. He's been with the team since 2018, following a two year stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Previous to that he was with the Islanders from 2010 until 2016. So, outside of two seasons with the Leafs Martin has played the majority of his 955 game NHL career with the blue and orange on Long Island. You have to wonder though if this is his last kick at the can?
