Matt Murray, Evander Kane, and more on a big day of waivers.

A ton of movement on Sunday.

The Ottawa Senators made the surprise decision of waiving veteran goaltender Matt Murray on Saturday ,a decision that was not well received by Murray himself, but as it turns out that was only the start of this weekend's crazy waiver activity.

First, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman is reporting that Murray has officially cleared waivers, an announcement that will come as very little surprise. There has been some speculation that either the Arizona Coyotes or the Buffalo Sabres could potentially consider picking up Murray on waivers but at a cap hit of $6.25 million he simply wasn't worth the gamble given his current form.

Murray has a 3.26 goals against average and an .890 save percentage over 6 games this season, not exactly the kind of numbers you want for that level of investment. Murray's last campaign wasn't much better, with a 3.38 goals against average and an .893 save percentage over 27 games last season. The 2 time Stanley Cup Champion could certainly find his game and bounce back into form, but there's been no indication that he is capable of doing so as of late.

As Murray comes off of waivers today another big name is headed onto the waiver wire, with the San Jose Sharks reportedly waiving star forward Evander Kane. Kane is set to rejoin the ranks of the National Hockey League when his current suspension for a violation of the NHL's Covid protocols has run its course, but it seems like the Sharks aren't all that interested in bringing him back.

Like Murray, Kane also carries a sizeable cap hit at an average annual value of $7 million, but unlike Murray he has shown strong form very recently. Kane led the Sharks last season with 22 goals and 27 assists for 49 points over 56 games played, and if it were just about his skills as a hockey player I suspect teams would be lining up to sign him. The off ice issues, negative public relations, and locker room issues that come with bringing in an Evander Kane however means he will likely pass through waivers as well.

Both men are expected to report to the American Hockey League should they clear, which means Matt Murray should be on his way to Belleville. A major demotion for the former 2 time Cup winner.

Last but not least the Ottawa Senators have also waived veteran forward Logan Shaw. Shaw is a depth forward on a league minimum contract, and we've already seen a few of those switch hands as a result of waivers this season. So far Shaw has 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points on the season after 16 appearances with the Ottawa Senators.

In spite of the fact that he is far and away nowhere near as big a name as either Evander Kane or Matt Murray, it could very well be Logan Shaw that ends up being claimed after a big weekend of waiver activity.
