Matthew Knies trade talk takes sudden turn as Leafs make final decision

League-wide speculation surrounding the Leafs winger has reached a boiling point on Draft night.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been at the center of blockbuster trade chatter heading into the 2026 NHL Draft, with nearly every big rumor circling back to one name: Matthew Knies. But despite the noise, the expectation now is that the 23-year-old winger will remain in Toronto.

According to Andy Strickland, the price tag to pry Knies away from the Leafs is extremely high, and general manager John Chayka has reportedly communicated directly to Knies that the organization has not been involved in any discussions that came close to trading him.

There is a significant difference between a team quietly shopping a player and a front office that fields calls, sets a steep asking price, and then reassures the player that nothing is imminent. By all indications, this is the latter.

The backdrop makes it even more interesting. Reports earlier this week indicated the Leafs had engaged in talks with the Dallas Stars about a potential deal involving Knies. According to Frank Seravalli, the framework reportedly centered on Dallas acquiring Knies while using the No. 7 overall pick it expected to receive from the Seattle Kraken as part of a sign-and-trade for Jason Robertson.

That pathway collapsed on Thursday night when Robertson reportedly rejected Seattle's eight-year contract extension offer, effectively killing the sign-and-trade. Without that pick landing in Dallas, the centerpiece of any potential Knies deal vanished.

So instead of moving closer to a franchise-altering swap, the Leafs found themselves back where they started.

That does not mean Knies was ever truly on the verge of being dealt. Toronto's asking price has reportedly been nothing short of a top-10 draft pick plus NHL-ready roster pieces, which is the kind of demand a team sets when it has no real desire to move the player.

The on-ice case for keeping him is straightforward. Knies posted 23 goals and 43 assists for 66 points in 79 games during the 2025-26 season. At just 23 years old, he fits the profile of a core piece for whatever version of the Leafs emerges under new head coach Jim Hiller.

Chayka himself has reportedly acknowledged that Knies possesses everything the organization values in a power forward, from his physical style to his contract situation. While the GM has said he will listen to offers, he reportedly does not appear motivated to move Knies unless a truly overwhelming package materializes.

Other teams will undoubtedly continue to call. Knies is exactly the type of young, productive winger that rival front offices covet. But the message from the Leafs heading into draft night seems clear enough. For now, Matthew Knies appears to be staying in Toronto, and the organization wants him to know it.
