The first overall pick at the 2025 National Hockey League Entry Draft has been taking the National Hockey League by storm to start the season, and now he has claimed a new NHL record for himself in one of the very first games of the season.

Everyone knew that New York Islanders first round pick Matthew Schaefer was going to be a special player, he was after all picked first overall, but did anyone believe he would be taking NHL records away from Sidney Crosby in his first few NHL games? Probably not.

That is however exactly what Schaefer did this past week when he became the youngest player in NHL history to eat up over 25 minutes of ice time in a single game, beating the record that was once set by a man we called Sid the Kid at the time. It was an incredibly impressive display on the part of Schaefer, who is only 18 years of age, and it becomes even more impressive when you realize that Schaefer actually played over 26 minutes on that night.

The game in question was against a fairly tough opponent as well with Schaefer accomplishing the feat in just his second NHL game, one in which the Islanders faced off against the Washington Capitals. Schaefer even managed to record a goal in the game, his second point as an NHL defenseman in as many games.

When he was asked about the pressure and the expectations that come with playing 26 minutes a night and the adulation of the fans in Long Island, Schaefer responded with a brilliant answer.

"No pressure, I mean pressure is a privilege and the fans are just there to help you," said the first overall pick. "I mean you wanna play for them you wanna win."

Fans in Long Island may be in for a very special season from this young man.
