And it’s not just me saying it, Chris Chelios is saying it!
Former Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios believes Detroit could be on the verge of a trade similar to recent moves involving Matthew Tkachuk. Back in the summer of 2022, the Calgary Flames traded the star forward and a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Florida Panthers for Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, prospect Cole Schwindt, and a conditional 2025 first-round pick. Tkachuk immediately signed an eight-year, $76 million contract extension with Florida, where he became a key player in their back-to-back Stanley Cup appearances.
Speaking about the Red Wings’ needs, Chelios pointed to the surprise trade of Tkachuk to the Panthers in recent years.
“No one thought Matthew Tkachuk was going to get traded to Florida, and then boom, he was out of Calgary,” Chelios said via RG.org.
Chelios stressed that Detroit could benefit from bringing in another seasoned, high-impact player to help push the team over the hump. “They need an impact player in Detroit. It’s hard because it’s not a great market. It’s not a great team. It’s tough to talk guys into coming there,” he added.
With Detroit looking to climb the standings, fans may be watching closely for a blockbuster trade that could change the team’s fortunes and potentially shake up the entire league.
Which star forward do you believe Chelios is hinting at and, will general manager Steve Yzerman be the one to bring him on or will he be fired and replaced by a GM who is willing to pull the trigger?
