He is disliked and, in some cities, hated on NHL ice. However off it, Matthew Tkachuk is a grieving friend who is trying to keep Johnny Gaudreau’s memory alive.

Tkachuk has always been one of the NHL’s most polarizing figures: a relentless force, hard on the forecheck, and often the most despised man on the ice. But behind all of his swagger on the ice lies a heart shaped by profound friendship and quiet devotion.

Reports have confirmed that Tkachuk began carrying Johnny Gaudreau’s pre-game ritual items with him into every locker room: a Catholic keepsake gifted by Johnny’s father. He also taked a sip of Johnny’s favorite pre-game drink, even a full year after the tragedy.

“It’s kind of like, ‘Johnny is going to be with you,’ ” Tkachuk explained. “I keep that in my kit that comes with me to all practices and games and on the road and everything … So he’s always in the locker-room, hanging with me.”

Their connection wasn’t just in Calgary where they shared the ice and became close teammates. It was one forged in laughter during warmups, inside jokes in the dressing room, and mutual respect off the rink, one that survived even the most tragic of circumstances.

When Johnny and his brother Matthew were tragically killed in a cycling accident in late August 2024, the world mourned, not just for the loss of an elite talent, but for a life so full of warmth and humanity. Both Gaudreau brothers had so much to live for. Matthew’s first child, a boy named Tripp, arrived in December. Johnny’s wife, Meredith, gave birth to their third in April. Carter Michael Gaudreau was welcomed by sister Noa and brother John Jr.

In the days that followed, Tkachuk made his grief known in the only way he could: succinctly and honestly. He simply wrote, “Absolutely devastated. I will miss seeing that smile! RIP Hockey! love you bro.”

Months later, in Columbus, the Florida Panthers showed up at the Blue Jackets’ home opener loaded with what Johnny loved, Skittles and purple Gatorade, organized by Tkachuk himself though he could be attend the game.

The contrast is striking. Here is a man known for his aggressive behaviour on the ice, now tenderly carrying the memory of a lost friend with him into every arena, every game. It’s a reminder that even hockey’s roughest personas can hold the most tender hearts.

Tkachuk wants to be make sure he is keeping Johnny with him, always.
