The Flyers see their top star and new head coach butt heads before the season even begins.
The Philadelphia Flyers made a huge move this summer when they pried head coach Rick Tocchet away from the Vancouver Canucks, but unfortunately for the Flyers they may have already hit their first bump in the road before the season even gets under way.
Michkov recently conducted an interview where he admitted openly that he isn't a very big fan of the dump and chase style of play that is prevalent in North America. Michkov made it clear that even when he was told to dump and chase, he initially chose to simply ignore those instructions and play his game instead.
"First time I heard that, I was like, ‘What?’ But I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, sure,’ then I’d hit the ice and still kind of do my own thing," admitted Michkov during the interview. "I’m not a fan of dump-and-chase hockey. I’d rather carry the puck in under control, make a clean pass, and enter the zone with possession. If you dump it in, now you’ve gotta go battle for it."
It seems that Tocchet himself has seen the clip in question and responded to it during a recent appearance on the Nasty Knuckles podcast. Tocchet even took a jab at his star player during the appearance and made it clear he would do so again when they spoke face to face.
"Well I watched the video and me and [Daniel] Briere were laughing," said Tocchet on the Nasty Knuckles podcast. "First of all he was going 2 miles an hour and there's nobody in front of him... well yeah obviously there's nobody in front of. I'm bustin his balls and I'm gonna bust his balls when I see him."
That being said Tocchet did also admit that he understands where his star forward is coming from and even added that he does intend to accommodate him on some level.
"Yeah I know what he's saying," admitted Tocchet. "He wants to hold on to pucks and he's got that talent, and we have to allow him to have that creativity. Listen we want to get this guy the puck as much as possible because he can make high level plays."
While this may seem like a less than ideal dispute to have between a star player and head coach that haven't even had the chance to work together yet, Tocchet has shown a remarkable ability to get players deemed as "uncoachable" by others on his good side. Perhaps the most notable example of this was former NHL star Phil Kessel, who shined under Tocchet as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
