Rick Tocchet sends a clear message to his top star.
Philadelphia Flyers star forward Matvei Michkov has rubbed another head coach the wrong way it would seem, after a clear message was sent to the young star by Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet on Saturday night.
For the third time in just 5 games, Michkov was glued to the bench after it became clear that Tocchet simply did not have faith that his young star would deliver on the ice. This time around Michkov was benched for the majority of the third period, with Michkov riding the bench for the final 11 minutes of that period, as well as the entire 3 on 3 overtime period.
The decision to bench Michkov during 3 on 3 in overtime was especially surprising when you consider that a highly skilled forward like Michkov would be exactly the kind of player you should want to send out there. Tocchet however is clearly having a rough time trusting Michkov when the game is on the line and that is a terrible sign for the 20 year old former first round pick.
Making matters worse is the fact that this can't simply be blamed on Tocchet being too difficult to please, with Michkov often butting heads with his previous coach in John Tortorella as well. Michkov has now played under two different coaches and has seemed incapable of earning their trust when it comes to the most important moments on the ice.
Tocchet was asked about the decision to move Owen Tippett into Michkov's usual spot and he focused on the positives from Tippett rather than addressing the Michkov situation.
"We need some energy," said Tocchet in his post game comments. "I thought once we did that, I went with 9, we started to come."
Tocchet is referencing the fact that he only used 9 forwards down the stretch, and it is very concerning that what Tocchet saw from Michkov warranted him being excluded from that group.
It's still early in the season, but it's been a bad look for Matvei Michkov under a new coach so far.
