Young Matvei Mitchkov steals the show in front of some of the greatest players in the world.
Philadelphia Flyers rookie sensation Matvei Michkov may have been playing mind games with his opponents the whole time.
On Sunday, the annual "Match of the Year" was held in Moscow, Russia, a charity event that brings together some of the best hockey players from around the world for an exhibition game. The game is effectively a National Hockey League vs Kontinental Hockey League All-Star Game, and has been held annually with NHL superstars Artemi Panarin and Mikhail Sergachev responsible for putting the whole thing together.
Although the event is for charity there always prove to be exciting moments from the event each and every year since its inception, and this year was no different. The NHL All-Stars destroyed the KHL All-Stars by a score of 15-3 but it may have been young Flyers forward Matvei Michkov who walked away with the highlight of the night.
During the course of the game Michkov would pull off a Michigan, a lacrosse-style goal that has been deployed by several NHL players in recent years, and made it look like the easiest one of his career in the process.
Now I mentioned that Michkov was likely playing mind games with his opposition and I genuinely believe that was the case. Although Michkov has attempted Michigan-style goals in the NHL before, he vowed to retire the move in an interview just one day before scoring the goal today.
"One season was enough for me," said Michkov of his Michigan attempts in the NHL as per RG Media. "I didn’t score once with it, so for now, I’ll leave it aside."
Michkov it appears was either not a man of his word, deliberately playing mind games with his opponents, or was perhaps talking specifically about his Michigan attempts in the NHL at the time he made his comments.
Regardless, it made his goal today all that much more spectacular and it is one that the fans in attendance won't soon forget.
