Training camp offers Domi his best chance yet, but life has dealt him a cruel blow…
The Toronto Maple Leafs are counting on forward Max Domi to play a significant role this season, but the forward is entering training camp with a heavy heart.
On Saturday, head coach Craig Berube had suggested that Domi, who was working through a lower-body injury, would be back on the ice shortly. True to word, Domi has returned to camp and says he’s feeling good with no setbacks. With multiple open spots across the Leafs’ lineup, the gritty forward will be ready to contribute in whatever role he’s asked to take on.
But just as he was preparing to ramp up for the new season, Domi was struck by tragedy. He shared a deeply emotional tribute on Instagram to his grandfather, who passed away earlier this week.
“Grampy. I’m going to miss you more than anything… There will always be a hole in my heart. I feel so lucky to have shared the last 30 years with you. You were always there. You are truly the greatest man I’ve ever known. You are the rock of our entire family and the reason we’re so close…”
On Wednesday, Domi took part in practice after attending his grandfather’s funeral the day prior.
It’s clear how much his grandfather meant to him, both as a role model and as a source of strength throughout his life and career.
Despite the heartbreak, Domi will soon find himself in a spotlight role on the ice. He is expected to slot in alongside Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies on the Leafs’ top line, a major opportunity for a player who struggled to finish last season.
In 74 games last year, Domi scored eight goals and added 25 assists for 33 points. While he provided grit and playmaking, his lack of shooting often frustrated fans and coaches. Entering the second year of his four-year, $15 million contract, the Leafs will need more offensive production from him, especially if he’s going to ride shotgun with Matthews.
For now, the Leafs’ forward is balancing immense personal loss with high professional expectations. If he can channel that emotion into his game, Domi could give the Leafs exactly the spark they need heading into the 2025-26 season.
