Forward Max Pacioretty is on the move. It has been just reported that the Vegas Golden Knights are trading Pacioretty and Dylan Coghlan to the Carolina Hurricanes, per Elliotte Friedman.
The Golden Knights receive future consideration in return in order to remain cap compliant. Vegas is not retaining any salary on Pacioretty in the deal with Carolina.
The Golden Knights therefore cleared $7.7 million off their books.
Pacioretty was limited by injuries over the last two seasons and there was a sense that the Golden Knights may feel it’s more opportunistic to ship him off during the offseason.
In 39 games last year, Pacioretty out up 37 points, including 19 goals and 18 assists. The Knights missed the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
The Hurricanes are definitely stacking up for 2022-23, adding Brent Burns, Max Pacioretty, Ondrej Kase, Lane Pederson and Dylan Coghlan... They have around $5.5M in cap space remaining after a busy first day in free agency.
Following the Pacioretty trade, Vegas now has $5,105,357 in cap space with approximately $5M of that going to Riley Smith’s new deal, and RFAs Hague, Roy, Kolesar left unsigned. Shea Weber’s cap hit of $7,857,143 would allow Vegas to exceed the cap by that amount once on LTIR.
The following roster transactions also took place in Vegas on Wednesday:
* The team has signed forward Reilly Smith to a three-year contract worth an average annual value of $5,000,000
* The team has signed forward Brett Howden to a one-year contract worth an average annual value of $1,500,000
* The team has signed forward Jonas Rondbjerg to a three-year contract worth an average annual value of $766,666
* The team has signed forward Sheldon Rempalto a two-year deal worth an average annual value of $762,500
