Connor McDavid is expected to win the Art Ross Trophy this season. The award is given to the player with the most points by the end of the NHL season.

The generational phenom won it last season, posting a remarkable 30 goals and 70 assists for 100 points on the nose, but this isn't enough for him. He wants the Rocket Richard, and he wants it badly. This trophy goes to the player with the most goals - last year's recipient was none other than Sidney Crosby, who scored 44 goals.

McDavid spent the summer trying to figure out how Crosby posted 14 goals more than him, and after studying the tape, it became clear to him.

“[Crosby]’s always in the right spot at the right time,” McDavid said to Frank Seravalli of TSN. “The puck seems to sit there, but it’s not by accident. It’s not a coincidence. It’s something that he’s doing. It’s something that I want to do.”

Crosby had 17 rebound goals in the crease area to McDavid's 9. 7 more of his goals were tips or deflections, of which McDavid had none last season.

McDavid's bread and butter has always been his insane top-end speed, and the proof is in his 8 breakaway goals last season (Crosby had 1).

The Oilers star knows that if he wants to make up the 14 goal gap between him and Crosby, he needs to work on his game around the net, and to do so, he has to slow down.

That's right. The fastest skater in the NHL needs to slow down to score more. He often will fly right through the crease and miss rebound and deflection chances, and so he needs to work on his timing to be at the right place at the right time.

What's most interesting about all this is that this is entirely self-motivated, and done without the help of the coaching staff.

He's just that determined to be the best at every facet of the game.
