McDavid becomes the 6th fastest player to reach 600 points in the NHL.
Incredible.
Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is one of the most impressive players to watch in the current era of the National Hockey League and on Sunday he checked off yet another incredible milestone on his steady climb up the NHL record books.
Goal number 600 for McDavid would come during Sunday night's matchup between his Oilers and the St. Louis Blues, and it could not have been more clutch. The Oilers were about to head into the first intermission with a one goal deficit to deal with, but with just seconds on the clock a pass from Oilers defenseman Cody Ceci sprung forward Zach Hyman. Full credit to Hyman here who used a great individual effort to create a scoring chance in the dying seconds of the period for McDavid, and although it wasn't the prettiest goal you're going to see it was a big one for the Oilers.
There are of course many players, past and present, who have reached the 600 point milestone, but even among that illustrious group of players only 5 of them have managed to do it faster than the Oilers captain.
McDavid's goal tonight means he accomplished the feat in 421 NHL games, a ridiculous stat in its own right. However NHL legends Jari Kurri (419), Mike Bossy (400), Peter Stastny (394), Mario Lemieux (323) and Wayne Gretzky (274) all managed to do it faster than McDavid did. I would be remiss however if I did not point out that none of the players on this list actually played in the same era of the National Hockey League that McDavid is currently playing in, making this particular accomplishment all that much more impressive.
McDavid is seemingly improving year on year at this stage of his NHL career and there is no question in my mind that we are going to see him continue to set an impossibly high bar for his peers to aspire to. The only question that remains for me at this point is which NHL records will McDavid eventually claim as his own?
