McDavid chirps back at Tortorella after Torts tells him to “just shut up”

In case you missed it last week, former NHL coach turned ESPN analyst John Tortorella shared a bit of a controversial opinion on Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid.

Despite the fact that McDavid is scoring at a nearly two-points-per-game clip (29 points in 15 games), Tortorella stated that he feels like the Oilers captain has to change his game if he's going to have any post-season success. ESPN host John Buccigross asked Tortorella point blank, what McDavid has to do take his team to the next level and... well here's what Torts had to say:

Buccigross: “What’s the next step to becoming a winning player? A playoff winning player? You’re not going to get the calls that you do in the regular season. He didn’t last year and that was an issue.

Tortorella: “Yeah and he complained about it a little bit, that he wasn’t getting the calls. Quite honestly, just shut up. Don’t talk about it. I do think he has to change his game a bit. Not turn into a checker, obviously. He’s talked about culture, he’s talked about standards, he’s talked about winning. You’re not just going to fill the net during the playoffs and outscore teams. You have to play on the other side of the puck. You have to have that business-type attitude of, ‘Nothing’s going to bother me, no matter how you’re going to check me.’

“Don’t talk about it, just play hard, play through it, but the other side of the puck is that important too come playoff time.”

Call me crazy but I don't think the Oilers' problems have anything to do with McDavid and his lack of grit...

Now, just a week later McDavid take a backhanded shot at Tortorella and his "just shut up" comments.

Check it out:

Perfect. Just... perfect.

Honestly, the whole "just shut up" take from Tortorella is pretty rich if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Torts fan but he's never been one to shut up himself. He's made an entire career out of being a loudmouth and I love him for it. I wonder how well his coaching career would have went if he followed his own advice?
