A sensational claim about a potential Edmonton-Toronto blockbuster is going viral, even as serious questions emerge about where the story originated.
The NHL rumour mill never truly sleeps, but every so often a claim emerges that is so explosive it stops hockey fans in their tracks. That is exactly what happened when a social media account posted what would arguably be the biggest trade in modern hockey history.
A user named Spencer Anderson posted on X that he was "hearing" that Connor McDavid had requested a trade from the Edmonton Oilers and that the team had already worked out a deal to send him to the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to the post, which is made to be a joke, McDavid allegedly made the request several days prior, with the Oilers keeping it quiet while they worked on a resolution. The claimed return reportedly involves John Tavares and Morgan Rielly heading back to Edmonton.
Anderson’s bio reveals that he is a parody, though he dares to include TSN and the NHL in the caption.
It should be stressed immediately that none of these claims have been confirmed by any established NHL insider, reporter, or either organization involved. No major outlet has corroborated the report, and the account that posted it does not appear to carry the credentials typically associated with verified league sources.
The reaction online has been swift and largely skeptical. One commenter responded bluntly, writing that they would "take things that didn't happen for a thousand," a clear reference to doubting the story's legitimacy. Another user questioned whether fabricating trade rumours had simply become a trend, asking, "Is it the cool thing now just make up bullshit?"
Despite the widespread doubt, the post gained significant traction simply because of the names involved. McDavid is widely regarded as the best player in the world, and any suggestion of him leaving Edmonton, particularly for Toronto where he grew up, is guaranteed to generate enormous attention. The Maple Leafs have long been the subject of fan fantasies involving McDavid, making the rumour catnip for engagement regardless of its credibility.
Part of me believes that Anderson was looking for attention and a good laugh, but the post also demonstrates how quickly unverified rumours can spiral into parody.
You all know that there is absolutely no credible evidence to suggest that McDavid has requested a trade or that any deal between Edmonton and Toronto is in the works.
However, this is not the first time McDavid-to-Toronto trade rumours have become a trending topic, and with him set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2027–28 NHL season, more and more rumours and trade theories will be put out there.
