Who will take him?
Each and every year teams in the National Hockey League spend millions of dollars on scouts and scouting in an effort to best evaluate the next wave of incoming talent at the NHL Entry Draft. It is an imperfect science but as more and more time passes, the evaluation of these talents becomes more refined with increases in understanding and improvements in technology.
This year the NHL draft will be no different although debate has started to rage surrounding the players who will be selected in the first round as we draw closer and closer to the 2022 NHL Entry Draft scheduled for July 7th in Montreal.
Recently Mitch Brown, who is paid to evaluate such talent as Elite Prospect's Director of North American scouting, highlighted a particularly interesting prospect in this year's draft that he labels as "the most electrifying" defenseman that will be available to team's in the NHL. That defenseman is Kevin Korchinski of the Western Hockey League, a 17 year old that is coming off 3 seasons with the Seattle Thunderbirds and who was ranked 16th in Elite Prospect's mock draft. In his most recent season Korchinski recorded 4 goals and 61 assists for 65 points in 67 games with the Thunderbirds, and finished the season with 40 penalty minutes and a plus minus rating of +36.
The young native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is particularly interesting due to the fact that he is labeled as a high risk, high reward type of player, something that makes him something of a gamble for NHL team's picking in the first round. While Brown was quick to praise his ability to read the feet of his opponents and in turn use that to his advantage to gain edges on the ice, he was also quick to point out some of the mechanical flaws in Korchinski's game as well as some aspects of his game that could prove frustrating for coaches at the NHL level.
It is an excellent analysis of the young man's game and one I can't recommend enough, and you can see it for yourself in the video below:
