Punishment should be 5 more minutes alone with Biz...
If you've been following the Paul Bissonnette saga since that wild night at a Scottsdale steakhouse back in November 2024, you probably remember the outrage that followed. Six men jumped the former Coyotes enforcer and Spittin' Chiclets podcaster after he stepped in to protect restaurant staff from being harassed. The whole thing was caught on surveillance video, the internet rallied behind Biz, and everyone wanted to see justice served. Well, the legal system has now had its final say, and let's just say it might leave a sour taste in your mouth.
A deep dive into Maricopa County court records has revealed that all four men who faced felony aggravated assault charges have been sentenced. Not a single one of them is spending a day behind bars.
The four men, John Gerrard Carroll, Danny Bradley, Henry Peter Mesker, and Sean Michael Daley, each pleaded guilty to aggravated assault. Carroll, Bradley, and Daley were each sentenced to two years of probation, while Mesker received two and a half years. That's it. No prison. No jail time whatsoever.
All four were ordered to pay restitution to Bissonnette, but even that number feels light. The court records indicate $8,000 in joint and several restitution, meaning the four of them share a single $8,000 obligation rather than each paying that amount individually. So we're talking about roughly $2,000 per person for a group felony assault on a guy who was trying to do the right thing.
Their probation conditions did include some restrictions, such as alcohol limitations, no contact orders with Bissonnette, being required to stay away from the restaurant where the incident occurred, and participation in anger management or substance abuse counseling depending on the individual. Two other men who were arrested in connection with the incident faced misdemeanor charges, though the final outcomes of those cases have not been confirmed.
For those who need a refresher, the incident went down on November 24, 2024, at Houston's restaurant near McDonald Drive and Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale, Arizona. Bissonnette was at the packed restaurant when a group of men began causing a scene in the bar area after staff refused to continue serving them drinks. As verbal confrontations escalated and turned physical toward employees, Biz, the former NHL enforcer who played for the Coyotes from 2009 to 2014, decided to step in.
Surveillance footage released by Scottsdale Police showed Bissonnette approaching the group and attempting to de-escalate the situation. He later said he grabbed one man's arm and told them there would be problems if they kept harassing the staff. That's when things turned ugly. According to court documents, Sean Daley allegedly held Bissonnette to the ground and kicked him in the neck and head area. Daley reportedly tried to kick him again but missed and fell backwards, giving Biz a window to retreat to a nearby CVS.
The aftermath got even more interesting when investigators on social media uncovered that the men were allegedly tied to a group known as "Irish Travellers," with connections to numerous paving and construction businesses that had piled up complaints about scams and shady work. Some of the accused were reportedly bragging about the assault on social media before scrubbing their accounts. Daley himself fled the scene and was only tracked down by police at his hotel, where he allegedly provided a false home address and was found carrying what appeared to be a fraudulent military ID.
Despite all of that, despite the surveillance footage, the bragging, the fleeing, and the fake IDs, the end result is probation and a shared $8,000 payment. Bissonnette vowed after the attack to "do everything he can to ruin" the men involved, and while the court of public opinion certainly delivered, the actual court system handed down what many fans will see as a slap on the wrist. For a guy who spent his NHL career dropping the gloves to protect teammates, Biz probably could have handled the sentencing portion himself in about five minutes flat.
