The Michigan State University Spartans confirmed some tragic news over the weekend when they announced the passing of longtime forward Preston Korytkowski. Korytkowski was just 22 years old.

Korytkowski spent the last 4 seasons of his hockey career with Michigan State University playing Division II hockey in the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Korytkowski, a left winger, appeared in a total of 103 games during his time with that program and put up 10 goals and 12 assists for a career total of 22 points.

On Saturday, the Spartans published an Instagram post that unfortunately made it clear Korytkowski had lost his life.

"Posting this with a heavy heart. Our teammate, friend and Captain Preston sadly passed away last evening." wrote the program on Instagram.

The response to the announcement highlights what a beloved and cherished individual Korytkowski truly was in the Spartan community, with hundreds and hundreds of messages expressing both grief and love pouring in. Many chose to remember Korytkowski by his nickname "Hands" addressing him as such in their loving farewells to their fallen friend.

Although Korytkowski spent 4 years with the program, eventually being named captain, he will be remembered as much more than just a hockey player. The tributes pouring in already speak to the kind and good-hearted man that he was, but he also had a brilliant mind and bright future ahead of him. Korytkowski boasted a 4.0 GPA and worked on a virtual-reality and human-AI multimodal interaction while studying at Michigan State University.

The hockey community and the world lost a good man this past week. My most sincere condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Preston Korytkowski and all of those impacted by this tragedy.
