"Let's cut through the bullshit," says the Oilers' head coach
Mike Babcock's return to the NHL has gotten off to a pretty impressive start, with the veteran head coach already making an impact behind the bench of the Edmonton Oilers. However, it wasn't his coaching decisions or the team's performance that had people talking on Thursday. Instead, Babcock found himself making headlines following a rather entertaining exchange with TSN reporter Ryan Rishaug.
During Thursday's media availability, Babcock appeared to take a playful shot at Rishaug, suggesting the longtime Oilers reporter was more interested in creating controversy and generating clicks than asking straightforward questions.
"Let's be honest, you came here today... the more problems you create, the more clicks you get. Let's cut through the bullshit," Babcock told Rishaug.
The exchange appeared to be lighthearted, with Babcock seemingly comfortable enough to joke around with the reporter. Still, not everyone watching was convinced that the interaction was entirely harmless, and some Oilers fans have taken issue with the head coach's comments.
The timing of the exchange is particularly interesting given how well things have gone for Babcock since taking over in Edmonton. The Oilers entered Thursday with an 11-2-3 record, putting them among the NHL's top teams after a coaching change that initially generated plenty of skepticism.
Babcock's hiring was controversial, to say the least. The former Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings coach hadn't worked an NHL game since 2019, and his departure from Columbus in 2023 following allegations surrounding his requests to view players' personal photos remains part of his reputation.
Perhaps that's why his interactions with the media are still attracting so much attention. Babcock has never been known as someone who shies away from speaking his mind, and Thursday's exchange with Rishaug certainly reinforced that reputation.
Whether Oilers fans view it as harmless banter or an unnecessary shot at a respected reporter, one thing is certain: Babcock isn't exactly interested in keeping things boring in Edmonton.
