The Montreal Canadiens are officially the worst team in the National Hockey League's Atlantic Division, at least for the time being, and that is quite an accomplishment when you consider the fact that this is a division that features the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres.
The expectations for this Canadiens team were sky high following a deep run into the Stanley Cup Playoffs this summer, one that saw them falter in the Stanley Cup Final against the Stanley Cup Champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning. The reality of the season has been a drastic contrast to those expectations with the Canadiens currently sitting as the Atlantic Divisions' basement dwellers with just 3 wins through their first 13 games of the regular season.
On Saturday night the Canadiens were handed their most recent defeat at the hands of the Las Vegas Golden Knights, this in spite of the fact that players like Max Pacioretty, Mark Stone and of course Jack Eichel are all currently sidelined as a result of their injuries. In the closing moments of the game, veteran forward Mike Hoffman did his best to sum up the Canadiens season in a single moment, a moment that will no doubt follow him as one of the lowlights of his career.
Hoffman was trying to get back to make a play on a puck that was streaking towards the empty Canadiens net, but unfortunately for the veteran winger he would not make it in time. The frustration of the moment, the game, and perhaps even the entire season so far seemed to get the better of Hoffman in that moment and he decided to take his anger out on the goalposts. Unfortunately for Hoffman the hockey gods were looking down in that moment and even his outburst of frustration would go horribly wrong.
Hoffman started by smashing his stick into the goalposts which went well enough, shattering the piece of lumber like a twig. The forward then skated his way along the corner boards and then seemingly out of nowhere it was as if Hoffman had gone completely stiff. He bumped into the boards and proceeded to fall awkwardly to the ice like a plank of wood.
A perfect way to sum up the Canadiens season so far.
