Mike Smith is trending after Oilers’ Campbell’s disastrous performance

This is hilarious:

Edmonton Oilers goalie Jack Campbell needs to start acting like a player who signed a five-year, $25 million contract! Through 10 starts this season, he’s put up a .873 save percentage and an abysmal 4.27 goals-against average. That’s just ugly.

Last night during and after the humiliating 7-2 loss against the Carolina Hurricanes, fans were angrily pointing out Campbell’s disastrous performance on social media. The goalie finished the game with 25 saves and a .781 save percentage. It doesn’t get worse than that.

Or does it?

When fans get former Oilers goalie Mike Smith trending by asking the team to bring him back, you realize how bad this is:

You can’t blame fans for wanting to see how Campbell before last season. With the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2021-22, over his first 10 and the difference is striking — 2.16 GAA and .926 save percentage.

At the start of the season, Smith landed on the long-term injured reserve as he was believed to have played through various injuries that hampered him throughout the campaign. He played just 28 games in 2021-22. He only has one-year left on a two-year deal paying him an AAV of $2.2-million.

Now, it is obvious that Campbell needs to find his mojo. But I can’t imagine what the Oilers would look like at this point into the 2022-23 season if Mike Smith was still the starter in Edmonton…

Right?
