There was a very scary scene that took place in the third period of the contest between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New Jersey Devils, as the game was tied at 4 and teams playing hard to get on top.

As Maple Leafs forward Ilya Mikheyev skated back to provide defensive support to his goalie Michael Hutchinson, the skate of rival Jesper Bratt caught him on the arm as he fell to the ice.

Mikheyev immediately knew something was wrong and took off his glove and skated straight to the dressing room.

Leafs insider Kristen Shilton of TSN noted that ice crew was trying to shovel up the trail of blood left by Mikheyev all through the Leafs zone as he fled for the dressing room.

See what happened:

You may remember a similar injury happening to New York Islanders’ Cal Clutterbuck prior to the holiday break. Clutterbuck was caught on the risk and needed to get to a nearby hospital to get stitches for the scary injury.

Mikheyev was also rushed to the hospital as soon as he left the ice.

The Leafs will likely provide more details on Mikheyev’s injury after the game or Saturday.

Here is what head coach Sheldon Keefe had to say on Mikheyev's injury and the fact that he will remain under evaluation at the Jersey hospital while the Leafs travel back to Toronto.

“He’s getting evaluated and it’s a deep cut, and now we're just gonna have to get it sorted out. He’ll stay here in Jersey tonight and get evaluated to figure out what needs to be done.”
