Mikko Rantanen facing nearly six figure fine.

Dallas Stars superstar forward Mikko Rantanen may have landed himself in a little bit of trouble in the last few months.

A breaking news report from Finnish media outlet Ilta Sanomat has revealed that Rantanen is now facing a nearly 6 figure fine related to compulsory military service in his home country of Finland. Rantanen is facing the fine due to what is being described as a an unauthorized absence from military service, service that was scheduled to begin on April 15th of 2024 as part of the Guard Jager Regiment. Rantanen, understandably, did not report for his service by the deadline and instead submitted an application to postpone his service. The application however was not received until 2 days later on the 16th of April, and now the prosecutor in this case is seeking to impose a massive fine on the NHL star.

The fine is not for a set amount but rather a set period, 10-15 days of salary, which some have estimated could cost Rantanen a whopping €84,750 euros or $98,776.22 USD. That of course represents a nearly 6 figure sum, a massive fine even for someone earning the kind of money that Rantanen earns as a top star in the National Hockey League.

Unfortunately I fear that this may be the case of a prosecutor looking to make a name for himself by punishing someone that enjoys celebrity status in his home country, as everyone understands that Rantanen is unable to complete his mandatory military service due to the fact that he is actively playing NHL hockey in a foreign country.

In fact at the time of the incident Rantanen was still actively playing as a member of the Colorado Avalanche, which would have made it very difficult indeed for him to honor the terms of his service without a delay.
