It really does seem now like every team around the National Hockey League was simply waiting for the first domino to fall into place.

Following a busy week of restricted free agent signings it now seems like the Colorado Avalanche have also secured their own restricted free agent for the foreseeable future. Although there has been no official announcement, it does not appear as though star forward Mikko Rantanen and the Avalanche have finally come to an agreement ona brand new contract that will see Rantanen continue his career in Colorado for the foreseeable future.

It was Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman who reported that a deal was on the verge of being announced, with Friedman initially reporting that his sources had informed him that the deal would come in at an average annual value of $9.25 million per season on a long term type of contract. It sounds like Friedman's sources were in the right ballpark as we now have a second, and more detailed, report coming out of Colorado.

AJ Haefele, Editor in Chief of Denver Sports, is now reporting that the Avs and Rantanen have agreed on a new deal and that $9.25 is in fact the average annual value on this deal. Haefele has significantly more details however including both the term and total value of this deal. According to the Avalanche beat writer this is going to be a contract with a 6 year term, which at $9.25 million in AAV will bring the total value of Rantanen's new deal to a whopping $55.5 million over the full term of the deal.

This has to feel like a big win for both sides here, and that usually means that a pretty good deal was mad at the negotiating table. Stay tuned for more details on this contract as we will be updating this article periodically as more information becomes available.
