Mikko Rantanen on the move as top contender finalizes deal in the middle of the night!
The framework of a deal is getting done to finalize a trade. Full details below:
There is a late-night, early-morning trade that is sending shockwaves around the NHL. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Fridman, the Carolina Hurricanes have a framework of a deal in place that would send Mikko Rantanen to the Dallas Stars.
After the two teams reportedly agreed on the particulars, the Stars began negotiations on an extension with Rantanen, who is said to be willing to sign there.
However, nothing is official until it all gets done.
In 13 games with the Hurricanes since joining the club on a significant trade at the end of January, Rantanen has collected two goals and four assists for six points. He has 27 goals and 43 points for 70 points in 62 games total this season.
Rantanen’s the biggest name to watch at this year’s deadline.
The former Colorado Avalanche superstar was reportedly offered a lucrative contract offer by the Hurricanes during the 4 Nations Face-Off, exceeding the $100 million mark. Rantanen was given some time to provide Carolina with an answer, though he is said to have turned down the deal. He was acquired by the Hurricanes in a shocking mid-season monster trade deal that caught absolutely everyone off guard, including Rantanen himself.
Since the trade the Canes have been trying to get Rantanen to commit to a long term deal with their franchise, but now will flip him again before today’s deadline for what could be the another blockbuster.
As for early on Friday morning, Rantanen is expected to become a Dallas Star.
