The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has issued a ruling and this one comes as no surprise after the events of last week.

According to an official announcement, Dallas Stars star forward Mikko Rantanen has been suspended for 1 game after a dangerous hit he delivered from behind on Calgary Flames forward Matt Coronato. It was the second dangerous hit from behind from Rantanen in the span of a few short days, a situation that left the NHL's Department of Player Safety with no choice but to suspended the star forward.

The hit on Coronato was hard to watch with Rantanen's hit driving Coronato's face hard into the glass and boards, causing his head to jerk to the side from the impact and leaving him busted open.

Here is a look at the close up replay in slow motion:

Coronato did remain in the game, returning after getting some repairs in the back, but the damage to his face was clearly visible.

As I mentioned this was the second dangerous hit from Rantanen in the span of just a few short days, with Rantanen delivering a hit from behind on New York Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov, a hit that led to Romanov being seriously injured, earlier in the week.

Many felt that Rantanen should have been suspended for the hit on Romanov alone but the NHL's Department of Player Safety opted not to suspend Rantanen for the first infraction, only for him to do it again a few days later. It was clear that the NHL had no choice but to act the second time around.
