Mikko Rantanen under fire after 2nd dangerous hit in less than a week.

Will the NHL finally suspend the star forward after this one?

For the second time in less than a week Dallas Stars star forward Mikko Rantanen has put another player in a very dangerous predicament.

On Saturday night, Rantanen and the Stars traveled to Calgary where they took on the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome in what was a pretty uneventful game through the first two periods of play. It would be in the dying seconds of that second period however that Rantanen would once again take liberties with an opposing player.

Rantanen would drive Flames forward Matt Coronato into the boards from behind with a dangerous hit, one that caused Coronato's face to smash into the boards in sickening fashion, with Coronato's head clearly jolting to the side due to the force of the impact. It was an awful looking hit and one that would earn Rantanen his second major penalty in less than a week.

Here it is again in slow motion:

Much to his credit, Coronato would return to the game but the damage that had been done to his face was plain to see.

It was only a few short days ago that Rantanen was involved in a similar incident involving New York Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov, an incident that left Romanov seriously injured. Fans in Long Island were outraged when the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety failed to suspend Rantanen for this hit, a situation that caused Coronato to be put in a dangerous position during a game that many believed Rantanen should have been suspended for.

Only time will tell if the NHL's Department of Player Safety will act, but after two dangerous incidents in such a short stretch of time I think it is very likely that Rantanen will be headed for supplemental discipline.
