Lucic’s EIHL debut is already causing waves off the ice.
Longtime NHL forward Milan Lucic is making headlines once again thanks to the controversy surrounding his latest contract.
On Wednesday, Lucic signed with the EIHL’s Fife Flyers, over two weeks after the St. Louis Blues released him from a professional tryout (PTO) contract. The signing was his first move since leaving the NHL, and it immediately stirred tension within the UK club.
Fife Flyers’ Chief Operating Officer Gareth Chalmers earlier resigned in protest, citing a need to protect his “personal and professional integrity for decisions I am opposed to.” Reports suggest Chalmers was strongly against signing Lucic, but the team moved forward regardless.
The fallout didn’t stop there. On Friday, local sponsor Skyhook Helicopters announced it would cut ties with the Flyers. The company, which had supported the team for the past two seasons, said its decision reflects “our commitment to professionalism, integrity, and our wider responsibilities as a business.”
The statement read: “We recognise that the club represents more than what is seen on the ice and includes many dedicated staff, volunteers, and community members who give their time and effort to support the sport and its fans.”
It goes on: “After careful consideration, Skyhook Helicopters has decided that, moving forward, we will have no further association with the club.
“This decision has not been taken lightly and reflects our commitment to professionalism, integrity, and our wider responsibilities as a business.”
Lucic, a former Boston Bruins star, has had legal issues in his past. In 2023, he was charged with assault and battery against his wife Brittany Carnegie. He pleaded not guilty, and the charges were later dropped in 2024 after Carnegie chose not to testify.
Since then, Lucic has entered treatment to deal with his alcohol addictions and anger issues, and has since been back with his wife, looking healthier and happier.
The signing of Lucic, known for his physical style and past NHL controversies, has clearly shaken the Flyers’ organization, with staff departures and sponsorship withdrawals illustrating the wider impact off the ice.
