Earlier on Wednesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that defenseman Jake Muzzin has been placed on the team’s injured reserve. The blue liner left Monday’s game against the Arizona Coyotes with an upper-body injury after a collision with Clayton Keller in the second period and his history with head injuries and concussions make it very worrisome.

When meeting with the media as Toronto gets ready to take on the Dallas Stars on Thursday, forward Mitch Marner addressed his teammate’s injury and his comments sounds devastating to Muzzin’s health and future, per team insider Jonas Siegel.

“Obviously for him it’s just making sure that, if he does come back and play this year, or whatever happens, just make sure that he’s going to be able to do whatever he wants to do the rest of his life and enjoy the time with his family, his kids.”

Wow. Last season, the veteran defenseman was limited to just 47 games with the Leafs last year due to injuries that included two concussion diagnoses.

Fans fear that Marner’s comments might point to a serious injury like a concussion, however, head coach Sheldon Keefe revealed how he was told that Muzzin did not suffer a head injury on the hit from Keller.

You have to wonder if the neck is hurt here and what it means for the defenseman’s recovery and future. Marner’s words sound bad, and we hope Muzzin gets well soon.
