The Toronto Maple Leafs had a controversial call go against them for a second consecutive game on Thursday night. And forward Mitch Marner doesn’t understand why Tyler Seguin’s goal was overturned and deemed legal as his team faced the visiting Dallas Stars. Marner commented postgame how the rules aren’t clear, visibly frustrated with the call.

“I don’t know the rules anymore. I don’t make them. It’s complicated.”

The problem on Thursday was how officials finally allowed Seguin’s tying goal when it was ruled he made incidental contact with Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov as the rebound trickled in. With the goal disallowed, Stars head coach Peter DeBoer challenged the call and waited for a lengthy review.

The refs overturned their decision seeing that they believed Marner, who was trying to box out Seguin on the Stars power play, caused the contact. The goal was good and the game, tied at 2.

“Video review determined that the actions of Stars forward Tyler Seguin did not impair the ability of Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov to play his position prior to the goal,” the NHL Situation Room said in a tweet.

It was clear that Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe and general manager Kyle Dubas were upset with the officials’ decision, though in the end, Toronto did end up winning 3-2 on an overtime goal by Nick Robertson.

However, it was history repeating itself seeing that on Monday, the Maple Leafs lost on a coach’s challenge, denying a tying goal late in the third period in an eventual humiliating loss to the Arizona Coyotes. It was determined that defenseman Morgan Rielly had committed a hand pass violation in the moments leading up to the goal by Alex Kerfoot.

Marner doesn’t get the rules anymore and couldn’t hold back when he was asked about it. Can’t blame the guy…
