Mitch Marner refuses any Leafs questions during recent charity outing
The Leafs winger wasn't interested in discussing hockey.
As if the intense media scrutiny for the Toronto Maple Leafs in hockey crazy Ontario wasn't enough, one player on the current Leafs roster who is especially under the microscope is Mitch Marner following another subpar performance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
During a charitable outing for his annual Marner Assist Foundation, all questions regarding hockey and the Maple Leafs were reportedly strictly forbidden. However, he was more than happy to talk about the experience of the event and his desire to give back to the community he hails from.
"I always knew I wanted to do something in the community to help out," he said. "I was born here, raised here, this is my home. I've been lucky enough that I've gotten a spotlight around me now being in this market and I wanted to do something special with it."
Here we are six years later, and it's been a blast."
When asked if he's gotten more comfortable with the fact that he's a public figure and that media sessions come with the territory, he indicated that it's something he's gotten more comfortable with as the years have gone by.
"I've learned to like it. Last night I wasn't too nervous, I was kind of excited for it mores, which is great," he continued. "I've learned through the years to not be nervous, just have fun and enjoy it and speak from the heart, that's what it's been like. Slowly through the years I've learned to public speak a little better, obviously as everyone knows in the market here you have to speak. It's been a good learning process for me."
