The Toronto Maple Leafs have been known to make bad off-season decision; debatable draft selection, head scratching trade or ridiculous contract to free-agent. The summer of 2015 is another agitated off-season for the Leafs' organization. The signing of Mike Babcock to an enormous contract, 8 years and $6.25M per season, nevermind that he is the coach, the Phil Kessel trade and the failed attempts to move at the draft.

Leafs nation's loyals must have been and still feel a bit lost in all those signings that Brendan Shanahan and his management team are making this off-season. Signings like P-A Parenteau, Shawn Matthias, Mark Arcobello, Matt Hunwick and Daniel Winnick.

According to Chris Johnston of sportsnet.ca, all those short term contracts are part of what he called Moneypuck.

"Stockpile useful players on cap-friendly deals that can be parlayed into more assets down the road. As an added bonus, the recent signings [...] should allow the Leafs to keep younger prospects in the American Hockey League for further development."

Assistant general manager, Kyle Dubas adds that those recent signings are a two way relationships for those players; offering them a chance to rejuvenate their career with the organization that offers the most exposure.

“You can go back to the last couple years and see guys that have come in on one-(year) or short-term deals and parlayed that into a lot of visibility, a lot of good coverage and now they’ll cash in here in July,” said Dubas. “So we’ll be looking to do that. I think especially now with having Mike (Babcock) as our coach that how those types of players are viewed by the other teams will only improve.”

Let's hope that Moneypuck will bring success to the Toronto franchise, because I am not sure how long the fan base will keep enduring the painful types of season they have been enduring for the last decade.
