One insider claims Edmonton has found their answer in Pittsburgh.
Last night’s humiliating 8-3 loss at the hands of the Dallas Stars clearly exposed how the Edmonton Oilers need to make a significant change in between the pipes to save the ongoing season. Goalie Stuart Skinner allowed four goals on just eight shots in the first period, prompting a quick hook. This led to Oilers insider Mathew Panchyshyn claiming this could have been the last game Skinner plays for Edmonton.
While no official announcement has been made by the Oilers organization or any other prominent insider, Panchyshyn’s report hints at major changes in net could be imminent.
But the trade chatter only got louder and on Wednesday late afternoon, insider Kevin Weekes chimed in, saying that Pittsburgh Penguins netminder Tristan Jarry was one of the goaltenders drawing significant interest as a potential option for the Oilers, seeing that he once played for the Oil Kings in Edmonton.
Jarry is returning tonight after missing seven games with a lower-body injury to start for the Penguins against the Buffalo Sabres. The goalie is 5-2-0 with a 2.60 goals-against average and .911 save percentage in seven games. Talks will only get louder if one scout from Edmonton attends the game to watch Jarry more closely.
The Penguins have a total of four goalies in their system. On top of Jarry, they’ve been counting on Arturs Silovs, Sergei Murashov and Joel Blomqvist. Earlier this week on his 32 Thoughts podcast, insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned how one could be on the move.
Weekes does not mention what would come back to Pittsburgh, though Skinner would be a hard sell at this point. However, with both Skinner and Pickard struggling, one of them would have to go to make room for an improvement in between the pipes.
The Oilers have been linked to other goalies, including St. Louis Blues’ Jordan Binnington, Nashville Predators’ Juuse Saros, New York Rangers’ Jonathan Quick and Toronto Maple Leafs’ Anthony Stolarz.
This is obviously heating up and we better keep an eye on this possible trade in Edmonton.
