Monster Leon Draisaitl trade scenario emerges amidst Oilers’ poor season!

Things are already looking different in Edmonton, but while a coaching change has been done by the Oilers, trade rumours remain on the forefront. Last week, Sporstnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Oilers were reportedly “on the precipice of a big move”, but it fell through. General manager Ken Holland allegedly informed clubs the Oilers weren’t going to a “desperate, dumb deal” for a goalie. However, without knowing what was presented, Friedman said that the Oilers couldn’t find a trade partner on anything they would consider reasonable.

Edmonton has been eyeing a few netminders around the league, including St. Louis Blues’ Jordan Binnington, the Montreal Canadiens’ Jake Allen and the Nashville Predators’ Juuse Saros.

The trade chatter has prompted different suggestions from pundits and analysts. Team insider Ryan Rishaug wondered if the Oilers could go after Predators’ prospect Yaroslav Askarov. However, the boldest suggestion came from ESPN sportscaster John Buccigross who took to X, formerly known as Twitter, that Edmonton should offer up star forward Leon Draisaitl and pesty forward Warren Foegele to the Boston Bruins for a multi-player return that includes 2023 Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark as the centerpiece.

Buccigross made the proposition in response to former Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney’s complaints to his former team’s disastrous start and it started trending. Ullmark, who signed a four year, $20,000,000 contract with the Bruins on 2021, is a tremendous goalie that would command a high price on the trade market.

However, let’s get real here. Draisaitl has been the best player in Edmonton this season and will go down as one of the greatest Oilers of all time. A trade like this one, in the first half of the campaign, is a huge stretch and come on, it won’t happen.

But what a bold monster trade scenario!
