The Ottawa Senators are in a tough spot. They still have two unsigned restricted free agents on their roster as training camp nears in forwards Egor Sokolov and Shane Pinto. When it comes to the latter, GM Pierre Dorion has held talks with his agent Lewis Gross, but no contract has developed as of yet.

Pinto, is is coming off his three-year, entry-level contract, and is expected to get quite the raise. Which is an issue in Ottawa seeing that, per Cap Friendly, the Senators currently have $895,953 in cap space for the upcoming season without using long-term injured reserve. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman believes Pinto will command $2.5 million and the lack of space for him could lead to a trade.

This prompted Jimmy Murphy to explore the chatter that the Bruins could attempt to acquire the young forward as, “according to a trusted NHL source, NHL teams are inquiring about the cost of the 22-year-old pivot on the NHL trade market.”

The source added: “I would expect the Bruins to be one of those teams given their present and future center situation.”

There is also the added belief tha the Senators would be willing to part with Pinto because they expect 21-year-old prospect and 2020 first-round pick (28th overall) Ridly Greig could be as good as or better than Pinto.

Pinto is coming off his first full season in the NHL, in which he posted 20 goals and 35 points in 82 games and could be traded for high-end prospects that could crack the roster this season, like Fabian Lysell and Johnny Beecher.

Let’s see if the trade keeps brewing before puck drop.
