Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney went all out this year and got everyone thinking his team would be crowned champions in June. However, the Bruins lost in the first round against the Florida Panthers after spending a high price for Tyler Bertuzzi, Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway on the trade market. Boston is left with little picks for the next drafts and a tough summer ahead with many unrestricted free agents to re-sign : Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, Nick Foligno, Tomas Nosek, Connor Clifton, Bertuzzi, Hathaway and Orlov.

Sweeney might have to pull the impossible to keep a few of them and that might be having to use Brad Marchand to save the Bruins.

Because Boston isn’t in a position to retool via the draft, it’s been brought up that the Bruins could consider trading valuable players to build around a core that would include David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy, Pavel Zacha, Hampus Lindholm and goalie Linus Ullmark.

The Bruins already have $72.9 million committed to the payroll for the 2023-2024 season for a total of 14 players.

All of these facts prompted Marc-Olivier Cook of the blog DLC to suggest that Sweeney should explore trading Marchand in a monster trade to get a significant return that would help the Bruins for a long time or gain some cap space to sign those UFAs.

I am not saying the Bruins will trade Marchand or even if that’s a great idea, however, the reasoning behind the proposed trade makes sense.

Marchand is still a top player, though he is aging and we’ve seen his production struggles this season at 34 years old. He holds a fairly affordable contract for what he brings, at $6.125 million until the end of the 2024-2025 season and would gets loads of interests from several teams across the league.

If Sweeney decides that he wants to look ahead and get the tools and resources needed for a rebuild, he might even recover several draft picks in a blockbuster trade involving Marchand.

This is one interesting scenario that will get fans wondering all summer long in Boston - and across the NHL!
