The 2023-24 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs hasn’t been a smooth transition for defenseman John Klingberg. The Maple Leafs signed the 31-year-old defenseman to a one-year, $4.15 million contract but so far, the experiment hasn’t provided the anticipated results.

Klingberg played in the Maple Leafs’ first 13 games of the regular season but was scratched for their 14th outing with an injury. He returned for Toronto’s 5-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks on Nov. 11, but isn’t likely to play later today when his team takes on the Detroit Red Wings in the first of their two games in Stockholm, Sweden as part of the NHL’s Global Series.

Klingberg explained how he’s been dealing with a nagging lower-body injury, which has caused him to hit rock bottom this season with the Maple Leafs.

While the blue liner may have an excuse for his rocky start, the Maple Leafs may not buy it as Luke Fox has reported that trade rumours have emerged around Klingberg, with a specific monster one linking him to the Calgary Flames.

Some wonder if this means the Maple Leafs and Flames could be exploring the idea of a defensive swap. Rumours recently surfaced in Calgary that defenseman Nikita Zadorov, who expressed the desire to be traded out of Calgary, isn’t the only blue liner drawing interest from other teams. Reports say that the Flames are listening on other pending unrestricted free agents, including Chris Tanev, Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm.

Could the Maple Leafs be attempting to get a replacement on the back end and ship Klingberg to Western Canada in the hopes that he will see the move as a good thing: we all know what a change of scenery can do.

We better keep an eye on this - we know Leafs’ fans certainly will!
