Slow down, we are not talking about the Chicago Blackhawks’ first overall pick at the upcoming draft. When it comes to it, the Hawks have made it clear they will not trade that pick as they intend to select top prospect Connor Bedard.

However, Scott Powers of the Athletic points to Chicago’s 19th overall selection, a pick they got from the Tampa Bay Lightning in last year’s Brandon Hagel trade. The insider believes the Blackhawks could look to move up with that pick and hinted at the Vancouver Canucks, who hold the 11th overall selection, as the Canadian team is looking to shed salary for next season. The Canucks have $84.168 million invested in 18 players, according to Cap Friendly, which puts them above the projected $83.5-million cap.

Therefore, Powers suggests that the Blackhawks bundle the No. 19 pick with one or two of their four second-rounders in this year’s draft to the Canucks for their first-rounder plus a player under contract.

It’s probably not that crazy of a trade scenario since Patrick Johnson of the Province in Vancouver believes there might be a way for the Canucks and Blackhawks to make the trade happen. Johnson cites one source indicating such a deal might be possible. On top of that, another source believes Canucks GM Patrik Allvin might consider this kind of offer if Vancouver can move out a contract in the deal.

Johnson knows the Canucks would prefer shipping out a high-salaried defenseman such as Tyler Myers or Oliver Ekman-Larsson, but he is aware that Conor Garland might be more enticing to the Blackhawks. After all, he is younger than Myers and Ekman-Larsson and carries a reasonable $4.95-million average annual value through 2025-26 and is in his playing prime.

While there is nothing set in stone ahead of the draft, this could gain some momentum as we get closer to June, 28th. After all, this is a deal that makes sense for both the Canucks and Blackhawks.
