A terrible tragedy took place north of Montreal on Wednesday morning. A man drove a city bus into a daycare in Laval, Que., killing two children and injuring six more.

The driver, a 51-year-old man named Pierre Ny St-Amand who was employed with the /Société de transport de Laval/(STL), was arrested and is facing reckless driving and homicide charges.

Around 8:30 a.m., the bus drove into the Garderie Éducative de Sainte-Rose in the Sainte-Rose neighbourhood on Terrasse Dufferin. Witnesses rushed to the scene and attempted to rescue children pinned under the bus. They also managed to subdue the driver, who was acting erratically. He was then handcuffed by police and now under investigation.

Two children are confirmed dead, one at the scene. 12 people were injured, including six other children who were recovering in hospital but are expected to survive. One adult was also taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

The Montreal Canadiens, whose AHL club the Laval Rocket play close to the incident, reacted to the tragedy and shared their thoughts with anyone impacted by the horrible news later on Wednesday. The team offers its support to all those affected by today’s tragedy in Laval.

This news just breaks my heart… Thoughts and prayers to all those affected by today’s tragedy.
